One thing I try and do before making a vid is check out the lyrics and more often that not map out scenes I can use in the right places. This wil also help the structure of your video.

Before you choose a song ask yourself are the lyrics appropiate to the character/theme and can I make them work? Choosing your favourite bands/song is cool but if you end up making a pretty random video it kinda denigrates the band's name don't you think? You have to be sure the song fits. I myself have been dying to do a Papa Roach vid but I can never find a song I want to do for Lost.

An important part of lyrics is the chorus. There are likely to be similar sounding beats on them etc. so it's good to use the same transitions/effects on them but don't use the same scenes just because you used them before. This is kinda boring for someone watching. Try a new take on the lyrics.

Good point, Paul. Just cos you have some song you really like, you can't just use it and try to make it work for Lost...pretty much none of the songs I've done have been my favourite songs, they're just songs I thought suited the vid.

Totally agreed. Believe me, I didn't use "Cry Me A River" because it was my numero uno, uber-favorite song of all time! (HONEST! ) I try to pick songs that really "tell" the story that I want to tell, as opposed to just grabbing a song that I like and trying to force it into a vid. I've got a ton of songs I'd love to use just because I love them, but so far they haven't worked for any vid idea I've had...

Hey, I do that! More often than not!

I agree completely...which is why you won't be seeing a Lost vid from me to Turkish Song of the Damned. It's one of the greatest songs ever (honestly), and there are moments that would be excellent as a Lost vid, but on the whole...uh, no.

Agreed, Paul! There have been several times that I think of a song that has a few lines that work for Lost, but the rest make no sense at all. What I've started doing, I print out the lyrics to a song I'm gonna use, then (sometimes) write out which scenes I want to use with the lyrics. I don't do it word-for-word and scene-for-scene, but it gives me a general idea of what I want and where. It also helps to mark the times when I'm working on a vid over several days. I just finished an Eko vid with my printed lyrics-outline, lol, I worked on it for about 4 hours straight, lol.
