Beat use: the part of a vid where the clips change or an effect/transition happens right on the beat. It can add a “WOW-factor” to an average vid. There are many ways to go about it, but the #1 concern is TIMING. If it happens too early or too late, it can make the vid look like a total mess.

Clip-changes: It looks really cool to have a series of short clips right on the beat, IMO. It can be of several different shots, or just go back and forth from one scene/character to the other.

Effects: You could try using one clip, and have it go from color to black & white on beat, or change up the colors! Adding in a filter also can be really neat.

Transitions: Really good way to make use of the beat! Most vidding programs have a pretty good variety of transitions, so make sure to pick one that goes with the song. My favorite ones are “shatter” and “whirlpool”, to use for a very strong and loud beat and works as a good transition from scene to scene. For slower songs, a nice and simple crossfade or “dissolve” transition probably works better. Be sure to time the transition with the song, if it goes to fast it can look sloppy, or if it’s too slow it ends up missing the beat.

Fades: Fades to black or white are great for beat use, however, be cautious when using a bunch of fades to white! They can seriously make the viewer want to pull out their sunglasses if too many flash on and off in a short time!

Motion beat use: A very cool way of using the beat is to use the motion or action in a clip to go on beat! Such as, say Kate slaps Sawyer in the face, right to the beat of the song!

So there you have it, beat use in a nutshell. One last note, there is such a thing as too much beat use! While clips that run longer than 3 or 4 seconds can slow a vid down, sometimes hitting every single beat can take away from the story you’re trying to tell! Some songs just scream for some really rockin beat use, while some just aren’t beat heavy. If you have a beat heavy song but are trying to tell a complex story, try going with every other beat. Play around with it, but be consistent with what beats you hit! Use your own judgment, and you can find your own way to be a beat use vidding champ.

oo great tutorial Heather I'm sure this will help a lot of peeps

I hadn't really thought too much about switching effects to the beat might try that more. You know what might be cool though if you did a video sometime where you illustrate some of the stuff you talk about here that'd be awesome.
