The red things are a weed that the aliens planted to feed themselves, but it was not surviving well on earth's soil (bacteria

). It eventually dies and so do the aliens, of course.
I finished reading the book last month and I was very pleased with what Spielberg did with the story. The ending was perfect. It is pretty much how the book ends.

I actually had a few issues with it:

Tom Cruise- NOT buying him as an "everyman"- so he has a vest on and a puffy hat and Im supposed to buy him as a "regular joe"? Also, Tim Robbins part- unecessarilly long. HE shouldve been edited down. He shouldve been edited down and they maybe couldve have spent more than 2 minutes explaining the ending- the downfall of the aliens? It just seemed really like contrived, like they didnt know how to end it so they just hurried up and made up the ending. They could have spent a little more time on it, thats all. Its like "oh and theyre dying, by the way". And yes I know it was based on a book.

Yeah and Dakota Fanning is starting to annoy me- we dont need her in every single movie now.

Also, a few times- got a bit LOST-esque- the plane thing, of course, that whole "LEMME GO!" thing with his son was a bit Booneish- especially when that kid risked his own life for other people, like Boone always did. Yeah TR definitely reminded me of Locke

BTW- I didnt get the weeds thing either- Spielberg couldve you know, explained that in the movie, rather than just pointing out the human "snack packs".
