I was talking about this guy in my Lost group and since his encounter with John in the hospital I think he needs closer inspection. This is one of the theories I came up with:
Abaddon was the name of the Angel of the Abyss in Revelations:
"And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time."
Revelation 20:1-3
I’ve always been slightly fascinated by the war between the Angels and the Demons, perhaps the last battle is still being fought on this island.
Jacob is the devil and is being held prisoner.
Abaddon wants to keep him locked up.
Richard wants to set him free.
The true chosen one is the key... |

Cool theory! I think I heard somewhere that the name Abaddon also means destruction, I'd have to double-check though. And the creators did say, the names aren't just given out randomly...they are done on purpose. I'm going to start working on a Name Analysis of all the characters possibly today or tomorrow. |

Oh yeah, the names mean a lot.
They like to use a lot of philosophers and physicists. Like John Locke, eighteenth century English philosopher or Michael Faraday, nineteenth century British physicist most famous for his work in electromagnetism.
I too have read about Abaddon being the bringer of destruction, it all depends on the religion. The Jehovah witnesses have turned him into a symbol for Christ but others believe him to be a demon or fallen angel.
It all puts me in mind of those Prophecy movies with Christopher Walken as Gabriel who, believing God favours mankind above the Angels, starts a war in heaven. |

Yep, and Rousseau is named after...I think an explorer.
My theory is Abaddon is the island, a manifestation of it, the way that the island communicates to Locke or Hurley for example. |
