Bear with me; this is my first foray into Vegas.
I have splitscreen effects in a video, from Vista WMM. The cut is harsh, one vertical split down the middle. I have figured out how to cut just the sections containing the splitscreen, for editing. (Edit: Or maybe I haven't. I selected the 'create subclip' option but can't seem to find the subclip itself anywhere.)
How would I select just the background of those sections and soften the line extremely, and then select the foreground and soften it more slightly? I am guessing this involves the 'cookie cutter' tool, but I have no idea where that is, never mind where to find it.
I need, like, a 'Vegas for infants' tutorial here, so please don't assume I know anything other than how to copy-paste and save. Thanks!

I think i can explain though!
Click the clip on the top
Then there is a little square on the clip in the timeline. Under that there is a wierd thing. Click that and a pop up screen will appear.
Then find cookie cutter.
use the feather to make it softer.
I think that's it.

'Click the clip on the top' - which one? In the line of video next to the timespan, or in the line of video next to the preview window?
Clicking either one does not give me a square. The top one just selects a point in the video, and the one next to the preview window just selects the subclip.

Furthermore, I tried taking the 'cut away section' from VideoFX and putting it atop the subclip, and it will not let me - I get a crossed out circle like a 'no smoking' sign.

Let me see if I've got this straight... You're wanting to soften the hard line of the split screen but you're using the rendered piece already split screened by WMM? In other words, you're trying to use Vegas to alter WMM's split screen effect on the rendered section?
There would be a couple of things to try in that case but it would honestly be easier to take your two original clips and split screen them with Vegas instead and make use of its feathering ability.  If you don't want to import your source material into Vegas and cut the clips out again with the trimmer, you could always go back to WMM and separate your two clips so that you have just one right after the other and rendered them - Vegas' ability to spot render is a really handy thing for things like that but you can always just delete everything else off WMM's timeline but those two clips, just don't save over your project. Then just import that piece into Vegas, cut the two sections apart and split screen them.
Before I go any further with this and provide instructions for all of that, I'll wait and see if I'm completely barking up the wrong tree.

That's it, yes. I've already rendered the whole video (it's the one I PMed you), so take a look at the split screens in there (which are already rendered first and clipped of their single-screen 'ends' before they were imported into the main video, making it not 2 clips, but a single clip - and don't stare too long; you'll go blind. ).
My beta folks told me the hard line was a little distracting, so I wanted to see what I could do to soften it without softening the actual people in the clips. Any more obvious suggestions besides just softening the background that you can think of would be helpful.
From what you describe, though, that sounds like a whole lot of work for not a great impact, though. I just may take a pass on it, rather than try and screw around on it and probably make it worse/more distracting.
