Before school starts up again on the 28th, I'm trying to do some pleasure reading, due to a $60 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble that was the joint birthday present given to me by a couple of my friends, who know I'm a nerd and will appreciate that more than almost anything else.
I bought a book by an author I like, who was friends with a musician I adore. The book is Basket Case, by Carl Hiaasen, who was close friends with Warren Zevon and who named the book after a song by Zevon (and the song figures in the plot). Here's the blurb:
Quote: | Once a hotshot investigative reporter, Jack Tagger now bangs out obituaries for a South Florida daily, "plotting to resurrect my career by yoking my byline to some famous stiff." Jimmy Stoma, the infamous front man of Jimmy and the Slut Puppies, dead in a fishy-smelling scuba "accident," may be just the stiff Jack needs -- if only he can figure out what happened. Standing in the way are (among others), his editor, Stoma's ambitious pop-singer widow, and the soulless, profit-hungry newspaper owner Jack once publicly humiliated. As clues from Stoma's music give Jack Tagger the chance to trade obits for a story that could hit the front page, murder gives his career a new lease on life. |
OK, so it wouldn't be for everyone - it's a quirky, dark-witted sort of mystery, not like an Agatha Christie or what have you, at all - but it's good so far. So what are you reading, and what do you recommend? _________________ I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. His hair was perfect.

I'm right now reading through all the HP books again. I read up to the third book when I was younger, but suddenly I just have to read them again and all the new books - it's like I'm addicted all over again. I'm into the fourth now, and looking forward to reading the rest _________________

I used to read all the time but nowadays I like to write my own stuff It's something I love to do. But one book I really adored was called 'Rosie Dunne' by Cecelia Ahern. It's a beautiful book and it's the only book I found that I really couldn't put down. It's goes through the lives of a boy and a girl starting from the ages of childhood to around their early fifties. It's clear to everyone but them that they're supposed to be together but they keep missing their chances. The book is told in letter/email form. Here's a summary:
Quote: | "Alex and Rosie are two Irish young people who seem to be destined for each other and everybody knows that. However, they do not realize this, as they have always been just best friends. When they are 17, they start meeting each other in more romantic conditions, but, Alex's parents decide to leave Dublin and go to Boston, U.S. Rosie fells absolutely devastated and she starts to go out with another boy, but soon she realizes that her true love is Alex. In this critical situation, they finally understand how much they love each other and make plans to remain together. Rosie decides to apply to college in U.S., so that she can be together with Alex. She gets into Boston University, Alex goes to Harvard and they both fell very happy.
But, before leaving for Boston, Rosie finds out that she is pregnant with the boy she used to meet while Alex was away. Now, she has to remain in Dublin and raise her child. While Alex studies hard and, finally becomes a brilliant doctor and finds a new love, Rosie becomes a single and unhappy mother.
But, years after, life brings them back together again, when they both lost hope. Will they be able to get over these past years and bring back the love they once had?"
Dana Samson, Resident Scholar
"This story begins by introducing you to two young children who are the best of friends. Their names are Alex and Rosie. As they grow older it is obvious they are meant for each other and everyone seems to see this except for the most important ones, the ones who are meant for each other, Alex and Rosie.
As the story goes on you find that many obstacles prevent them from the one destiny that they both long for. It seems as if they take turns wanting to tell the other they are in love and desperately want the other. Rosie finds she is pregnant, after fate has caused Alex to be absent and in his place another man who she absolutely has no feelings for. After moving half across the world Alex finds himself in love and walking down the aisle twice, both times not with Rosie." |
There's a happy ending of course. If you cry easily you'll be weeping at the end of it =) I strongly recommend it if you can get it. It's a wonderful, unique story. |
