Well, maybe not but I'M VERY CLOSE TO THE EDGE.
My WMM 2 is totally crap. I have no idea what happened this time.
Today, when I was going to continue with my project (new vid, I was finished with like 1 min) - all the clips went black! NO-TH-IIII-NG. Just the music.
I can't import any .wmv files or anything. WTF?!
When I first started it and opened my project, it said that it couldn't find the codec. Ehum, okay? It's been working just fine until now. I just don't understand.
So... I want to know. Break it to me.
Do I have to reinstall WMM now, and make all my imported clips go to... yeah. You know?
This Sunday can't get any worse.
HELP ME!

Do you have DVIX?
Did you just update it? |

Aw, poor thing! *puts pillow on desk so Johanna doesn't hurt her head while slamming it*
Ashleigh's got you on the right track by asking about DivX. Anytime WMM, Windows Media Player or pretty much anything on the computer complains about codecs, then something's gone wrong with DivX.
Before you uninstall WMM or anything like that (Microsoft is running their site a little differently now that Vista has come out -- which has WMM 3 included in it -- it's harder to find WMM2 to install again), try a few things first. If you haven't tried this, sometimes it'll help. Close all of your open programs and reboot the computer. If it's just a temporary glitch, that might get it working again. If not, then it's a more serious problem.
Next I would try installing the DivX codecs again from here (they act like you're going to have to buy something but you don't. The DivX Community Codec is free and I believe you don't have to take the 15 day trial of the Pro if you don't want to).
Hopefully that will do the trick. If not, other things to consider are:
1. Did this problem start after you installed any new software?
2. Added new hardware?
3. Updated existing hardware or software?
Any new changes can have made this stop working like that, so if you can pin down what changes have happened, then sometimes you can figure out how to fix it!
Good luck, hon! *hugs* |

I actually had a similar problem recently.
I updated my Divx and after doing so had the same problem.
I sloved this problem by uninstalling DIVX, the updated version, and ghen reinstalled the old version.
Hope you get it fixed soon, I know what a nightmare it can be. |

First of all... Oh, Ashleigh and Aislynn! Thanks for your support!
Second of all... *hugs Ais back and cuddles with pillow*
And third of all...
1. I reboosted my computer and it still doesn't work.
2. I've had DivX for a long, long, looong time now. It's been working just fine, so I don't think it has anything to do with that.
(One thing I noticed though while clicking on Ais' link: -- does this mean I can't press it since I already have DivX?)
3. I just realized I updated my Windows Media Player to version 11 (or was it 12? ....anyway, who cares) a few days ago. It did ask something if I wanted to upgrade my codec, and I'm afraid I said yes... Could this be the problem, and if so -- how do I fix it?
Though I still think it's strange I can't import .wmv files to WMM...
I went completely nuts when I saw that all my precious clips were black, totally depressing... And my precious video. Argh, I have GOT to fix this!
*slams head towards desk again*
.....
*almost hurts head and remembers Ais' pillow*
.....
*everything OK* _________________

More than likely that's the problem. You can click on Help -- About Windows Media Player and that will bring up a thing that will have your version number on it. Right above About Windows Media Player, it says Troubleshooting Online. You might try that one as well. I see it sends you to Microsoft's site and there might be some helpful information there.
Grrrr. I hate it when these things happen! But there's got to be a way to fix it somehow!

Hmmm, sorry about that! I went back through a different way... Try this link... You end up getting the DivX player and web player as well (I like the DivX player, myself, sometimes it will play things that nothing else will!) or it may give you the choice of only installing the codec, I'm not sure...

The clips should be fine, at least! It's just that WMM can't "see" them properly right now. But once you get this codec thing corrected, it should be able to see them again just like before!

That's all I need to hear to be calm. *puh, no more deskslamming*
The DivX is downloading right now! Hope that's going to fix the problem. And I hope that it was just my usual bad luck-Sunday (It has turned into Monday over here now )
Aislynn, you truly are the godess of vidding! *bows* Thank you.
I think it's going to be fine now, actually. Or at least I hope so. I'll try this out tomorrow, right now I just want to go to sleep... _________________

Thanks Ash!
But I kinda solved it now, I'm finally gonna do what I've been thinking of doing for about 1 year now -- buy Vegas. I saw that it was on sale for 660 :- in Swedish kronor (= about 90 dollars) so, I'm gonna save half of the money this month and the rest next month, and then order it
(WMM has just been the worst pain ever since I first started working with vidding like last fall. So, even if WMM worked I'm gonna get it)
But just so you know, I'll be asking a LOT of questions when I finally get Vegas _________________

You should get Vegas. It's definitely worth it.
WWM is a serious pain in the ass! |

Oh, that's great, Johanna! Vegas looks hard at first but once you get the hang of it, it's just SO much better than WMM! And we've got a lot of How-To help threads for Vegas. Paul's Vegas Beginner's Guide is a really great one to start with because it covers how to get clips onto the timeline by using the Trimmer, which is one of the things most different from WMM to Vegas. Plus there are a lot of us who use Vegas or Vegas Movie Studio and usually somebody knows the answer to a question! |

Oh, I know. It's giving me the creeps just thinking of what problems I've had with it.
Aislynn; I've actually tried Vegas twice before, once on my (un-rendable because of RAM) old computer, and once on this new computer (I actually used Vegas a bit with my latest vid to get the ratio right ). So, I do have some experience but I'm sure I'll need help. And this is a promise! I'm going to egt it!
I'm so looking forward to doing the vid I was doing in WMM (before it went totally %&¤#) in Vegas. It's gonna be so much better...
Hmm, can you tell that I'm a planning-person? _________________
