In case you couldn't read that banner:
Quality #1
"A montage is a nickname created by us for a video that has NO connection to the song. It merely plays random clips in a line with few interesting qualities like effects, or cuts to the beat of the music. There are few clips used, and often they span over 15 seconds at a time, (NEVER a good thing, even on slow songs). SOMETIMES the song choice reflects the clips, (e.g. the title of the song "Montage" reflects the video, which talks about montages) but otherwise, no simillarities are noticable. This all shows that the vidder didn't work hard on their video, making it unfit for the site."
Quality # 2
"As you may notice, this form of music video is a HUGE improvement from the regular montage. The clips are placed at the right timing of the song, and even some minor effects are used to give it a professional feel. The only thing that seperates this type of video from a 3 or 4 quality is the fact that the clips have no MEANING for being there in the song. There is no connection between the lyrics and the clips, nor is there a story being told in the clips. These are randomly-chosen clips of Charlie and Claire to a beat. No artistic ability is yet portrayed. "
And as for the second one:
"Talking about quality # 3:
Very simillar to #2, isn't it? Except those random clips that were placed throughout the video AREN'T RANDOM!! They have a meaning for being there, such as relating to the lyrics, or, if the person is doing a montage-like showing of a character, are placed in the proper order (so it doesn't, say, switch from Kate just talking with Jack to running from the monster) They also fit to the style of the video or verse, like a drum roll being an action scene or a slow yet meaningful beat for a slow yet meaningful look between two shippers. Not hard to do, it just takes more work, and a bit of artistic instinct."
'As for Quality Level 4:
It can only be reached by something that is trully original! Think! Use your creativity! Think-up something that's never been done before, and DO IT! ^^"
"Here are some more things to try to avoid doing... but nobody's perfect, right? "
"The Messy Clip: Shown when one tiny frame gets caught in the beginning of a clip. It is VERY hard to get rid of all of these things, and some are just stuck there in the clip sometimes. The only sure-fire way to get rid of them is by using fade effects. Just be careful."
"Clips of people talking. (It sometimes just ruins the mood a bit)"
"Aspect Ratio Changes: The ratio of width to height. Check out the "Vidder Help" forum for details."
"Words: i.e. Credits. Distracting, but aren't really a big deal."
It's kinda tough to acurately outline what we want in these, or rather, what we don't want, but the videos in the video pretty-much sum-up what those levels of quality look like (the examples that is) Don't be offended if it happens to describe your video either. There's nothing at all to be ashamed of, you just need to know that there's a bit more that we're asking for. Granted, it's hard work making a music video, especially putting that extra work in, but in the end it's all really worth it!

Thanks for the video hobbes! It was funny, and at the same time helpful. The only thing that your video could improve on is the text scrolling. I got a headache reading it, it was too jumpy or something. _________________ My cat might have given what IT had to my MOOOOM |

Yeah I know It couldn't be helped lol, it lost most of the quality when it had to be reduced. But this thread is more for just discussing anything you have questions about in it! lol |

You actually *can* get rid of them, pretty easily, all of the time.
If you're using Windows Movie Maker, those 'messy clips' are actually frames that get leftover in your clips when you divide them because WMM is not very precise software. The best thing to do for all your shots is watch the entire shot, make sure you have *more than what you need* and then clip the front and back to whatever 2-3 second bit you're looking for. |

I'm not sure I agree completely with that. I've been using Movie Maker 2, and when I made my newest video, Skaterboy, I made the first draft, saw some errors, and went to patch them up in my project file so I could make a second draft. The thing is, after I did that, I watched my second draft and there were two MORE mistakes that showed up, big ones, and they were'nt there before in my first draft. This was strange to me since I didn't remember changing any of the clips those blemishes were on, but I nonetheless checked back on the project, looking frame by frame through the movie at those points. I was surprised not to find EITHER of the frames those blemishes were on. The preview window showed the same old clips both at the clip before and after the blemish, so I didn't, and still don't, know what to do with it... Unless MM2 can somhow hide a frame in another frame, I'm at a loss...
And yes, the best safety from those things is to cut your clips a few frames from the scene change (both before and after)
The only problem with this is if you're the type of vidder who operates their videos at the highest magnification level (like me) and relies on some shots of even less than a second to fit the music, that 0.3 of a second gets to be a very harsh sum from some of those clips... |

WMM doesn't show you all the frames, which is why you miss them in the first place. It's just not precise software. You can watch the same vid four times and see four different errors, but not see the frames that contain them in the timeline because WMM won't show it to you, which is why using bits from longer shots works best.
Luckily, LOST isn't shot like TV news and has longer 6-10 second clips that you can grab from. Basically, trying to get *all* of a two-second clip (meaning all two seconds) into your video is bound to cause errors. You can plan on getting one second from that two-second clip, but any more is pushing it. WMM also breaks apart imported episodes in strange ways which are more likely to cause errors.
So, I guess my thesis is that WMM just sucks. |

I use Adobe Premiere. Its a lot more precise in cutting clips. A lot better than WMM, in my opinion. |

I still use WMM and I've just gotten in the habit of everytime I add a clip, I trim it on both ends to try and not get the little "blips" (as I call them). I've actually gotten much better with it, and the "blips" are disappearing! I haven't tried Adobe, but I have tried Ulead, and what's sad is that I preferred WMM to that.
Like you Hobbes, I save my vids a couple of times over as drafts, if you will, as well. Just to make sure my timing is right and the "blips" are gone. _________________ Get Ready to Disappear...
