Well, the thing is, there are a lot of people who just submit videos that don't actually fit the parts of the video.
Think of it like a certain level that they think about their videos:
1: the song name and general theme (eg. "Breakaway") fits the general theme of those in the video (eg. Sun needs to "Breakaway" from Jin)
-these people generally just put random clips of their shippers (Jin and Sun, for instance) in a video to the tune of the song.
THE PROBLEM with these is that they are really easy to do and EVERYBODY makes them (one person sent in FIFTEEN of these at once to us) and if we accepted every one of them, we'd just be swamped with almost-identical videos. They're really easy to make, and really fast to make. In fact, they're just about equal to saying "Hey! don't you thing _this_song_ would make a great _person/shipper_ video!!!?!"
(please note, I don't think "Breakaway" is this quality video)
2: The same as #1, but the clips fit the tune of the song well (so the clips might cut out at the right timing as the end of a stanza, or on a cymbol smash, etc.) These are a HUGE improvement from the last one, but it still can basicly be summed up by "Hey! don't you thing _this_song_ would make a great _person/shipper_ video!!!?! That drum beat in it would be a cool spot to put a series of clips!!!". They're pretty common too, but at least they take a longer time to make, so we know the vidder put a lot of work into it.
3: The same as #2, except those random clips that were placed throughout the video AREN'T RANDOM!! They have a meaning for being there, such as relating to the lyrics, or, if the person is doing a montage-like showing of a character, are placed in the proper order (so it doesn't, say, switch from Kate just talking with jack to running from the monster) They also fit to the style of the video or verse, like a drum roll being an action scene or a slow yet meaningful beat for a slow yet meaningful look between two shippers.
4: The same as #4, except that there's something really original about the video. It could be funny, it could have really cool effects, it could have some topic that nobody has ever done yet, etc. The sky's the limit!!!
There should be no reason why an ordinary vidder can't get at LEAST as high as #3. it just takes a bit of work. It's not even about talent, really, just eagerness to put everything they can into making a great video (and now that you know what we're looking for, you know what to shoot for too!)
(Other judges, respond along with this if you have anything to add or is different from how you judge. Or just type "I agree" if you DO agree with what I'm saying just for the public to know. I don't wanna put any words in your mouths )

Here here HOBBES.
My biggest pet peeves with the vids Ive "judged":
Clip length- IM here to watch your take on something- whether it be a Kate/Sawyer video or a funny ensemble piece. Make it yours! We are NOT watching an "episode". There has to be something specific that you like about a particular scene- a face that someone makes, a piece of dialogue. Isolate it and USE it...dont have the scene run on for 15 seconds. As a good "rule of thumb" try to keep it 4 seconds or less. Sounds really short, but it actually isnt.
Timing- like Hobbes said, if you have a song with a beat or percussion, try to match the clips to it. Its really annoying to be watching a slow paced video to a fast paced song.
Special FX- yeah theyre cool, but should the scene transition with in a funny goofy way (ie- "carnival mirror") if its a serious video? Personally I dont like TOO many effects, just enough that you dont "notice them" they fit in with the spirit of the video. It should not be distracting from your scenes or your point, they should only enhance. For example, I just watched a video where the vidder overuses the "zoom in- zoom out" effect. Virtually every scene had this in it. It was understandable at first (perhaps the disembodied feeling Charlie has with his drug use) but it was used in EVERY scene. I actually got a little sick.
Practice- if you submit 5 videos a week, just to have "submitted" some- chances are, you didnt spend much time on them. A vid from someone who spent lets say a month (differs from vidder to vidder) on theirs is probably going to kick your vid's ass. NO offense, its just true. Youll get better, I promise!
Music- Just because it seems to be a good choice, listen to it over and over again before investing any clips to it. Do you think others will "get it"? We had a vid submitted today near 8 minutes. Try to keep it 5 or less, it should be enjoyable, not having people glance at their watches.
Um, thats all, sorry for rambling! |

Wow, you found this old thread back from the "ol' days". Great pointers Rocksiren, I especially love the "Practice" one. I never thought about using that one before as a tip, but it is most definitely true.
Wow... that is a very unorganized post up there at the top Hmmm.... Nah, too lazy to edit it up. It'll just have to say as a tribute to the old days when things were less complicated and the air smelled more.... airy. |
