I recently had my entire harddrive wiped and I needed to redownload everything, including all of my TV episodes but now I am having some problems importing them into WMM. I got them from the source as before and I am not doing anything differently. They play just fine, but when I try to import them, I get a pop-up saying I need a codec, so I went to the Options and checked the box that said Download Codecs Automatically. But I still get a similar pop-up saying C://episode.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again. I downloaded DivX and the DivX codec from the website, but it's still giving me the pop-up. It's really frustrating. Does anyone know what I can do.

I kept meaning to post about this but forgot  until I read your post just now. Of course, my warning wouldn't have done you any good because you had to wipe the hard drive. 
The problem is the new DivX codec, which won't let WMM or Vegas either one import OR work with AVI, yet you can watch AVI just fine with Windows Media Player!   (WMM gave me those same exact error messages about downloading codecs automatically and all that; nothing worked for me either!  )
I knew that DivX had just prompted me to update a day or two before I tried to open an AVI file in WMM and Vegas, so I was fairly sure that that was where the problem was. I couldn't find ANY help for it though, but fortunately, I was able to uninstall DivX 6.6 and reinstall 6.2.5. DivX still has a download for it (though they've made it VERY hard to find ). After I installed 6.2.5, WMM and Vegas could import AVI just fine. There must just be some sort of weird conflict thing in the newest release. I hope they'll fix it in the future!

Would you consider it inapropriate if I dip you and kiss you? Seriously, you just saved my life and more importantly, my sanity. I was ready to chuck my computer out the window. I was so frustrated because I didn't know what was going on, but after I deleted and downloaded the proper codecs, I was able to import everything. THANK YOU SO MUCH! *Sammysmishes Aislynn*

Well, I'm a bit dusty from the house repairs but if you'll give me a minute to fix my hair and make-up... Seriously though, I know just how scary that is! I nearly had a heart-attack when I thought I wasn't going to be able to import anything AVI into ANYTHING! I'm just glad to hear that the solution worked for you, too! Whew!
